As a litigator and transactional attorney licensed to practice in both Florida, and in Italy, Alexander Guttieres has over thirty years of experience in handling a broad range of civil and criminal matters in the United States and throughout the European Union.  Mr. Guttieres’ extensive professional experience in the common law and the civil law systems, as well as his international background and proficiency in various languages make him uniquely qualified to assist individual and corporate clients in complex litigation, and in a wide array of commercial transactions, and family disputes.  His international practice allows him to provide his clients the added benefit of responding to their particular linguistic and cultural needs, which is especially effective when their claims or interests stem from contacts varied jurisdictions, as in the case of mixed marriages.

During the course of his diverse international practice, Mr. Guttieres has been involved in   substantial litigation and arbitration, as well as a variety of commercial ventures and transactions throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. As an attorney also specialized in family law, Mr. Guttieres has assisted many clients throughout the world, including various public figures who were involved in high profile international family disputes.  Mr. Guttieres’ firm maintains close correspondence relationship with attorneys throughout the United States and in Europe that enable it to provide clients with and efficient and effective assistance in numerous countries.
Throughout his career, Mr. Guttieres has lectured and taught extensively, and has organized numerous international conferences and symposiums.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Before moving to Italy in 1992 to pursue a law degree from the University of Rome that would allow him to gain admission to the Italian Bar in 1996, Mr. Guttieres practiced in Miami since 1981 as an associate and partner in several law firms in Miami, where he specialized in tort, family, and contract law, as well as commercial litigation. In 2009, Mr. Guttieres became a founding partner of the International Law Offices of Guttieres & Grillandini (ILO), with offices in Rome and Miami.

Mr. Guttieres’ accomplishments in ILO include:
Representing successfully a Kuwaiti corporate client in a federal action for the recognition and enforcement of a 20 million dollar foreign judgment;
Petitioning successfully for the return of several minors pursuant to the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Parental Abduction;
Obtaining a 1.4 million dollar judgment for an American national in a breach of contract action against an Italian company before the Rome Court of Appeals;
Securing a settlement in a wrongful death claim arising as a result of Italy’s largest airline disaster;
Securing the acquittal of an American national who was charged by the Rome Prosecutor with multiple counts of manslaughter and arson as a result of a fire arising in a luxury hotel in Rome that caused three casualties, and over $ 35 million in property damages;
Successfully representing a Kuwaiti corporate client in civil proceedings before the Court of Appeals of Rome that reduced to $ 1 million a $ 12 million binding award obtained during arbitral proceedings before the International Chamber of Commerce;
Representing successfully dozens of individual clients in international family disputes involving concurrent claims in various jurisdictions;
Representing successfully the tort claims of numerous individuals and in particular, those of American nationals who incurred damages while in Italy.
