Gender reveal stunt led to plane crash in Texas – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale

(CNN) — Another gender reveal stunt went horribly wrong and caused the recent plane crash in Texas, according to a National Transportation Safety Board accident report released Friday.

The pilot was flying a plane at a low altitude on September 7 as part of an elaborate gender reveal for a friend, according to the report.

The pilot dumped 350 gallons of pink water from the plane, but the plane was “too low†and immediately stalled. The pilot was not injured in the crash in Turkey, Texas, about 100 miles southeast of Amarillo, The plane’s other passenger had minor injuries. The plane was designed to carry only one person, the report said.

This incident was the latest in a string of gender reveal stunts gone awry.

In October, a family in Iowa inadvertently built a pipe bomb for a party that exploded and killed a grandmother.

Last year, an off-duty border patrol agent was ordered to pay more than $8 million in restitution after his gender reveal caused a forest fire in Arizona.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The former son-in-law of Paul Manafort has been sentenced in Los Angeles to nine years in prison for a series of schemes, including one that bilked $3 million from actor Dustin Hoffman.

A federal judge ordered Jeffrey Yohai to pay $6.7 million in restitution on Friday and said he has “an evil mind.â€

Yohai pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud for schemes that included renting out luxury homes without the permission of their owners and selling non-existent backstage passes for the Coachella music festival.

Hoffman and his son Jacob invested millions in a bogus real estate deal with Yohai.

Yohai had once been married to Manafort’s daughter, Jessica.

Manafort was campaign chairman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and has been convicted of federal crimes.

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) — Police are searching for an archer who shot arrows at a homeless encampment in the San Francisco Bay Area, striking two men in the abdomen.

The East Bay Regional Park District police said Saturday the victims were hit by arrows around midnight in Richmond, a working-class suburb east of San Francisco. Police say the attacker was someone the victims knew.

Sgt. Gretchen Rose said the victims were staying at the encampment along the San Francisco Bay Trail but their attacker did not live there. She said one victim was additionally hit in the leg.

Both men were taken to the hospital, where one underwent surgery. They were listed in stable condition.

MIAMI (WSVN) – A driver was arrested and is facing DUI charges after, officials said, they collided with the City of Miami Police cruiser of an officer who had stopped to help a stranded motorist.

The incident happened along Interstate 95 northbound near Southwest Eighth Street, at around 5:30 a.m., Sunday.

“It was a miracle, man, honestly,†said Wayne Cruz, the driver who had initially pulled over on the side of the road. “Luckily, he was there, and he was able to save us all.â€

Cruz credited the Miami Police sergeant with saving him from the brunt of the crash.

“The car came up … just rammed into him, messed up his car,†said Cruz.

The impact left apparent damage to the police cruiser.

Crews had pulled over along the shoulder because of a cracked rim.

The sergeant pulled up shortly after and closed the lane of traffic, as crews waited for a tow truck.

“We were just standing there man, honestly,†said Cruz. “We were sitting in the back of the truck. We barely had time to, like, honestly, just walk away or anything, and it just happened.â€

Police said the driver who slammed into the cruiser was driving under the influence.

No one was injured.

“Who knows what could’ve happened?†said Cruz.

The driver responsible for the crash was placed behind bars and is facing DUI charges.

Man sues Madonna, saying her 10:30 p.m. concert in Miami Beach started too late – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports | Fort Lauderdale

(CNN) — “There’s something that you all need to understand,†Madonna said during her Las Vegas concert, while perched atop a piano, legs swinging. “And that is, that a queen is never late.â€

The mega star spoke those words to fans during the show this week, posting the video to Twitter on Saturday.

And despite the cheers that came from the crowd, not everyone agrees. One Florida fan is betting the law won’t agree either.

Nate Hollander is taking the singer to court over her late start times.

Hollander filed a lawsuit Monday in Miami-Dade County court against both Live Nation and Madonna. He alleges that the change in start times for her Madame X Tour is a breach of contract made between the singer and the ticket buyer.

In August, when Hollander bought the tickets to Madonna’s December 17 show at the Fillmore Miami Beach, the concert was scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m., the lawsuit alleges. But on October 23, Madonna and Live Nation changed the start time for that show and several others to 10:30 p.m., the suit alleges.

For those like Hollander, who bought tickets and now don’t want to attend a concert that late, a refund has not been offered, he alleges.

And attempts to resell won’t make up for the money lost, as tickets have now “suffered an extreme loss of value†because of the time change, he alleges. That makes reselling “impossible,†he said.

Hollander originally bought three tickets to Madonna’s Miami Beach show, spending $1,024.95, he says in the filing. But, since the show is now starting later than originally planned, he claims that he and other ticket holders “suffered actual and consequential damages including, but not limited to, loss of consideration paid and the devaluation of the ticket.â€

CNN has reached out to Madonna and Live Nation via email and voicemail, but requests for comment have not been returned.

Rose said the victims were familiar with the suspect, but don’t know his name.

Rose said the victims were familiar with the suspect, but don’t know his name.

— Madonna (@Madonna) November 9, 2019

Rose said the victims were familiar with the suspect, but don’t know his name.

CNN

(CNN) — “There’s something that you all need to understand,†Madonna said during her Las Vegas concert, while perched atop a piano, legs swinging. “And that is, that a queen is never late.â€

The mega star spoke those words to fans during the show this week, posting the video to Twitter on Saturday.

F. A.C.T.S. 👑 ……………….. #madamextheatre #thecolosseum pic.twitter.com/QBV99f1Y3I

— Madonna (@Madonna) November 9, 2019

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – A South Florida cross country and track and field coach has been arrested after he was accused of inappropriately touching students while acting as an authority figure.

Carlos Maymi, 32, surrendered to police on Tuesday and faces charges of battery and offenses against students by authority figures.

A June Miami-Dade Police report alleges that while with a student Maymi had once coached when the student was in high school, “he grabbed both of [the victim’s] buttocks.â€

The report adds that he also tried to kiss the victim, but when the person resisted, “he continued at his attempts to kiss the victim.†The report said he was met with resistance.

Maymi coached at St. Brendan High School in Southwest Miami-Dade and at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens prior to his arrest.

Parents outside the high school said they were unsettled by the charges.

“Completely unacceptable,†one parent said. “Your role is to be a mentor for those kids on school grounds, and that’s it.â€

7News went to the address listed for Maymi but were told he was not home.

Another set of accusations states that between July and August 2019, Maymi came onto one of the St. Brendan students he was coaching, who was a cross country/track and field athlete.

“The defendant was in a position of a caretaker and of authority when he intentionally touched the victim’s buttocks against her will,†detectives said in the arrest report.

The Archdiocese of Miami said when the allegation came in, the incident was immediately reported to the Department of Children and Families, and Maymi was put on administrative leave. He was discharged the following day.

“I don’t understand why a professional who is hired into a trusting position would make those kinds of mistakes,†a parent said.

St. Thomas University said that as of August 2019, Maymi is no longer with the university, and he has been removed from the university’s website.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – An investigation is underway after a woman was fatally shot outside a strip mall in Southwest Miami-Dade.

Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue crews responded to the scene along the 10900 block of Southwest 184th Street just after 1 p.m., Friday.

According to police, a 62-year-old woman was conducting business at the establishment when a security guard accidentally fired his weapon and struck the victim.

The woman was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she later died.

Witnesses at the scene described Nefertiti, the corner business where the shooting, occurred as a “mini casino.†They added that a security guard is always posted at the door, and the security guard involved was new on the job.

“All I know is that the security guard was playing with the gun and went off by mistake, and it hit the lady,†a witness said after the shooting. “I think she’s OK, but they had to go to the hospital anyway. I don’t know why he took out his gun or whatever, and it went off. It’s nothing about shooting at nobody — nothing like that — an accident.â€

7News cameras captured the security guard sitting in the back of a police cruiser. He will soon be taken to police headquarters for further questioning.

“I saw one lady come out,†a second witness said. “She looked like she was either shot or hurt. They took her away. I didn’t see her moving, but she was being taken to the hospital.â€

The shooting remains under investigation, and homicide detectives have been called to the scene.
